1.  What is a Standard or Enhanced DBS Check?

A DBS check is an in-depth criminal record check used to assess the suitability of a candidate for specific roles identified by the law.

It is usually obtained for people working with Children or Vulnerable Adults (e.g: in care or teaching roles or in schools or care homes) or for people working within the Financial or Legal sector.

There are 4 levels of DBS Check:

1. Basic DBS: click here for more information
2. Standard DBS
3. Enhanced DBS (excluding the children and/or adults barred list checks)
4. Enhanced DBS (including the children and/or adults barred list checks)

Each level of DBS check searches different criminal record information.  

Standard DBS and Enhanced DBS checks are strictly regulated by the law.  Standard DBS and Enhanced DBS checks can only be obtained for certain roles which have been identified by the law as eligible for a Standard DBS or Enhanced DBS check.
